The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Adam Ibrahim Tama, for allegedly attacking his 19-year-old niece, robbing her and attempting to kill her at their residence in Katsina.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police on Saturday.
According to the statement, the incident was reported at the Sabon Gari Police Division on June 22, 2026, by Hajiya Jamila Ibrahim Tama, who alleged that her younger brother attacked her daughter, Fatima Nura Lawal, at about 3:23 p.m. the same day.
Police said the suspect allegedly assaulted the victim with knives and a piece of firewood, inflicting a deep cut on her right ear and multiple injuries on different parts of her body.
The statement added that the suspect allegedly tied the victim with a rope and stuffed her mouth with a sponge in an attempt to suffocate her. Believing she had died, he reportedly dragged her into a bathroom before fleeing with several valuables.

Items allegedly stolen included an iPhone 13 Pro Max valued at ₦750,000, a Samsung A05 phone worth ₦185,000, a power bank and ₦18,500 in newly issued ₦10 and ₦20 notes.
The police said detectives were immediately deployed after receiving the report, while the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. She was later discharged after receiving medical attention.
According to the command, investigators swiftly tracked down and arrested the suspect. A search reportedly led to the recovery of the stolen iPhone 13 Pro Max, while a school bag containing a pair of sandals and a long gown allegedly purchased with part of the stolen money was also recovered.
Police also recovered two blood-stained knives and a piece of firewood believed to have been used in the attack.
The command said the suspect confessed to committing the offences during interrogation and would be arraigned in court upon the completion of investigations.
Commissioner of Police Ali Umar Fage commended the complainant for promptly reporting the incident and praised the officers whose swift response led to the suspect’s arrest.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Katsina State and urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely information on criminal activities.
