The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal notice to radio and television stations across Nigeria, warning against rising violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly in news, current affairs and political programmes.
In a statement released on April 17, 2026, the Commission said it had observed a “sustained increase” in breaches of the 6th Edition of the Code, noting that broadcast platforms are increasingly being used in ways that fall short of their responsibility to deliver accurate, balanced and professional information to the public.
The regulator warned that with the approach of the 2027 general elections, it would enforce “strict and uncompromised compliance” with all provisions of the Code, especially those relating to fairness, accuracy, hate speech, incitement and respect for constitutional institutions.
The NBC expressed concern over what it described as a growing decline in professionalism among programme anchors and presenters. It cited instances where broadcasters allegedly expressed personal opinions on air, failed to present opposing views, or allowed biased narratives in discussions on public issues.
The Commission stressed that presenters must maintain neutrality and ensure that all sides to any issue are fairly represented, preferably within the same programme.
It further warned that any presenter found expressing personal opinions as facts, intimidating guests, or denying fair hearing would be classified as committing a “Class B breach” under the Code.
The Commission also raised alarm over the misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors, accusing them of promoting divisive and inflammatory content.
According to the NBC, such practices violate provisions of the Code that prohibit hate speech, incitement to violence, and content capable of undermining national unity or public order.
It emphasised that broadcasters bear full editorial responsibility for all content aired, including live programmes, and cannot shift accountability to guests or contributors.
Placing broadcasters on formal notice, the NBC said any station found airing unbalanced, inflammatory or unverified content would face regulatory sanctions.
“Compliance is mandatory, not discretionary,” the Commission stated, adding that the airwaves must not be allowed to amplify tension or spread misinformation as the country moves toward another election cycle.
The latest directive comes amid ongoing debates over the scope of the NBC’s regulatory powers, particularly following a 2023 Federal High Court judgment which restrained the Commission from imposing fines on broadcast stations—a decision recently upheld by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
Despite the legal limitations on monetary sanctions, the NBC continues to exercise oversight through enforcement of the Broadcasting Code and other administrative measures.
Media stakeholders have long emphasised the importance of balancing effective regulation with the protection of press freedom, especially during politically sensitive periods.
The NBC, however, insists that adherence to professional and ethical standards remains critical to ensuring credible information, responsible public discourse, and national cohesion.
