FUDMA Staff Unions Commend Management’s Welfare Initiatives

-

By Staff Reporter

The four major staff unions at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma have commended the university management for implementing welfare initiatives aimed at improving staff well-being and enhancing productivity.

The unions—the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the National Association of Academic Technologists—praised the administration for measures including the distribution of rice to staff, payment of allowances and improved transportation services between the university’s two campuses.

The commendations were made during separate interviews with FUDMA Weekly Bulletin on June 24, 2026.

Chairman of ASUU, FUDMA branch, Dahiru Rabe, described the management’s attention to staff welfare as commendable and urged the university leadership to sustain the momentum.

Rabe said staff welfare is a shared responsibility between management and the unions, revealing that ASUU is exploring partnerships with private transport companies to complement the university’s efforts in addressing commuting challenges.

“We have our plan, but we do not want to reveal it to the public until it materialises,” he said, hinting at additional welfare interventions being considered.

Also speaking, Chairman of SSANU, FUDMA chapter, Peter Seri, said the administration’s welfare policies had given staff a renewed sense of belonging, boosting morale and job satisfaction.

While applauding the initiatives, he appealed to the university management to increase the number of vehicles transporting staff between the main and take-off campuses to improve shuttle services.

On behalf of NASU, the union’s Secretary, Sulaiman Ibrahim Aliyu, expressed the union’s full support for the welfare programmes introduced by the current administration.

He said welfare schemes are essential to motivating workers and improving organisational performance, urging the management to provide additional buses to strengthen transportation services within the university.

Similarly, the Public Relations Officer of NAAT, Sulaiman Yusuf Maigora, said the union fully supports the management’s efforts to improve staff welfare.

Although NAAT has no plans to provide transport services for its members, Maigora appealed to the university to deploy more vehicles to enhance the existing shuttle system between the two campuses.

The unions’ endorsement comes amid broader efforts by the university management under the Vice-Chancellor, Mohammed Khalid Othman, to improve staff welfare and discipline.

The bulletin noted that the university recently commenced payment of five months’ hazard allowance arrears approved by the management, a development widely welcomed by staff as a significant boost to morale and financial well-being.

It also reported that the Vice-Chancellor had warned against lateness, truancy and irregular attendance during a meeting with provosts, deans, directors and heads of departments, directing academic and administrative units to maintain daily attendance registers and conduct periodic audits.

According to the bulletin, the management has also continued investing in security, electricity and other infrastructure on the main campus while implementing measures to decongest the take-off campus by relocating some faculties and students.

The four unions said sustained collaboration between management and staff representatives would be critical to consolidating the gains recorded in staff motivation, institutional effectiveness and overall productivity.
