Katsina / Abuja — The Nigerian Senate resumes plenary today after a brief recess, with the proposed establishment of State Police and the recent Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State topping its agenda.
According to reports from Punch Newspapers, lawmakers are set to revisit the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which seeks to create State Police Services. The bill was transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly on September 16 and requires approval by at least two-thirds of the Houses before presidential assent.
The Senate had postponed its two-day National Security Summit earlier scheduled for October 12 and 13 following the crash of a NAF ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, which claimed the lives of 25 officers and seven crew members.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the postponement was in honour of the victims and in line with the three-day national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu, who also ordered flags to fly at half-mast and a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, said the constitutional amendment and security challenges remain key priorities.
