Geneva — The Federal Government has announced that more than 7,000 Nigerian refugees voluntarily returned home from neighbouring countries in 2026 under Tripartite Agreements.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, disclosed this while delivering Nigeria’s national statement at the 77th Session of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to the Minister, another 14,000 Nigerian refugees in Cameroon have registered their intention to return, while an agreement covering the return of 2,000 Nigerians from Niger is being finalised.
Dr. Doro said improved security conditions in parts of the country have created opportunities for voluntary return. He added that Resettlement Cities established in seven locations are supporting the phased closure of displacement camps.
He noted that Nigeria currently hosts more than 142,000 refugees and asylum seekers from 42 countries, and is managing over 6.7 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to international refugee protection obligations and called for stronger international responsibility-sharing in humanitarian financing.
