Katsina Governor Inaugurates KT1T Committees, Targets 2m Trees in 2026

-

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has inaugurated the four-tier implementation structure for the Katsina One-Person-One-Tree (KT1T) Initiative, which targets the planting of two million trees across the state in 2026 and 11 million by 2030.

The initiative is aimed at combating desertification, climate change and environmental degradation while promoting a greener and more climate-resilient Katsina State.

Radda inaugurated the committees on Thursday at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Katsina, ahead of the statewide launch of the initiative scheduled for September 10, 2026.

The Governor described KT1T as a key component of the environmental pillar of his administration’s Building Your Future agenda, noting that environmental protection has direct implications for agriculture, livelihoods, public health and community wellbeing.

He said the initiative was designed to make environmental protection a shared responsibility among government and citizens, under the principle of “One Person, One Tree, One Responsibility.”

“This is not simply about distributing seedlings or organising tree-planting ceremonies. We want trees that are planted, protected, nurtured and established,” Radda said.

The Governor explained that the implementation structure comprises a Central Steering Committee, three Zonal Monitoring Committees, 34 Local Government Supervisory Committees and 361 Ward Implementation Committees.

He charged the committees to ensure proper distribution, planting and monitoring of seedlings, stressing that accountability at the ward level would be critical to the success of the initiative.

According to him, the effectiveness of KT1T would ultimately be measured not by the number of trees planted during official ceremonies, but by how many survive and become established in the years ahead.

Radda therefore urged traditional and religious leaders, community leaders, women, youths and other residents to take ownership of the programme and protect the trees planted in their communities.

Earlier, the Special Adviser on Climate Change, Prof. Alamin Mohammed, described KT1T as a practical response to the environmental challenges confronting the state.

He said the programme would involve mobilisation, registration, seedling production and allocation, planting, monitoring and digital documentation.

Also speaking, the Katsina State ALGON Chairman and Chairman of Danja Local Government Area, Hon. Rabo Tambaya, pledged the support of the 34 local government chairmen and 361 ward councillors, stressing that grassroots participation would be crucial to achieving the programme’s objectives.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Hon. Bashir Tanimu, assured that the ministry would collaborate with local government authorities to ensure effective implementation across the state.

He urged members of the various committees to approach their assignments as a responsibility to both present and future generations.

Governor Radda directed all implementation teams to intensify preparations for the September 10 statewide launch, expressing confidence that KT1T would develop beyond a government initiative into a people-driven environmental movement across Katsina State.
