Insecurity Persists in Bakori as Abductions and Rural Displacement Raise Concern

By Our Correspondent

Insecurity remains a major concern in parts of Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, with residents reporting continued abductions, attacks on rural communities and the movement of families from vulnerable settlements to safer locations.

The concerns have been highlighted in a series of Facebook posts by community resident Mahadi Danbinta Guga, some of whose reports relate to incidents subsequently corroborated by government authorities.

One of the most serious incidents was the attack on Guga on July 26, 2026, during which five hunters and a member of a local vigilante group were killed.

While Mahadi identified the six deceased community security personnel and described their role in defending Guga, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, separately confirmed the deaths of five hunters during the operation.

According to the Commissioner, more than 200 heavily armed bandits attacked Guga at about 5:40 p.m. The attackers were allegedly led by notorious bandit kingpin Idi Abasu Aiki, with support from members of the Ado Aleru group from neighbouring Zamfara State.

Mu’azu said security forces, supported by community-based security personnel, repelled the attack and killed more than 40 suspected bandits. He added that about eight senior commanders were among those killed, while Idi Abasu Aiki reportedly sustained life-threatening gunshot injuries.

Mahadi had earlier reported that six people on the community side were killed, identifying the sixth victim as Idris Ibrahim, popularly known as Babawo, a local vigilante.

In another post, Mahadi said six people were abducted about four weeks earlier at Dajin Guga, also known as Dawan La’ila, along the Bakori–Guga Road.

He reported that two of the victims had regained their freedom following ransom payments, while Sagir Mani Dantalle, Ibrahim Alhaji Audu Kahinta, Hadiza Guga and Idi Jambo Kakumi remained in captivity because their families were reportedly unable to meet the ransom demands.

He also reported the separate abduction of Malam Goje Kakumi on the outskirts of Kakumi.

Mahadi appealed to elected representatives at the local, state and federal levels to assist in efforts to secure the release of the remaining victims and reunite them with their families.

The claims concerning the four named captives and the ransom payments had not been independently verified at the time of reporting.

In a separate incident, Mahadi reported that five residents, including the Ward Head of Unguwar Balarabe in Danja Local Government Area, Alhaji Saminu Balarabe, were allegedly abducted when armed men attacked the community at about 10:30 p.m.

He said the victims comprised three males and two females, adding that the ward head was an elderly man with health challenges.

The report followed an earlier attack on neighbouring Unguwar Gero in Jiba Ward, which Mahadi said also resulted in casualties.

The reported incidents in Danja could not be independently verified, and no official statement confirming the identities or number of victims was available at the time of filing.

Mahadi also raised concerns about residents leaving a number of communities because of insecurity.

He listed Unguwar Karma, Layin Rama, Unguwar Dogo, Alhazawa/Gidan Nagari, Ganjar, Shuwaki, Doka and Karofi among communities where he said residents were increasingly seeking safer locations.

He said he recently witnessed women from some of the affected communities arriving in Bakori town with children and household belongings in search of places to stay.

The development, if sustained, could have significant consequences for farming and rural livelihoods in the affected areas, where residents depend heavily on access to their communities and farmlands.

Mahadi also reported an attack on Gidan Aminu in Kandarawa Ward, Bakori, on Tuesday night, August 11, 2026.

He alleged that the attack resulted in two deaths, cattle rustling, abductions, injuries and robbery of residents’ belongings.

According to his account, the attackers were earlier sighted moving eastward from Doma in Faskari Local Government Area before disappearing and later emerging at another location.

He commended the response of hunters and other security personnel but said the attackers’ familiarity with the terrain appeared to have helped them evade security positions.

The claims regarding the Gidan Aminu attack, including the number of casualties and abductees, had not been independently confirmed by security authorities as of the time of filing.

Mahadi also expressed appreciation for the reported ₦1 million financial assistance provided by the Katsina State Government to each of the families of the six community security personnel who died in the Guga attack.

He said the assistance was encouraging to vigilantes, their families and the communities they serve.

The government had earlier confirmed the deaths of five hunters during the Guga operation.

The latest developments illustrate the complex security situation in the affected areas, where community-based security structures continue to play an important role alongside conventional security agencies.

While the government has reported significant successes against armed groups—including the reported killing of more than 40 attackers during the Guga operation—residents continue to report abductions and attacks in other locations.

For affected communities, the immediate concerns remain the safety of residents, the return of those still in captivity and the ability of displaced families to eventually return to their homes and farms.

The reports attributed to Mahadi have been distinguished between incidents independently confirmed by authorities and those awaiting official verification.
