KATSINA — Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has returned to the state after holding high-level security consultations with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigeria’s top security chiefs in Abuja, as the state government confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity.

The governor’s return came amid renewed efforts by both the state and federal governments to tackle insecurity following the tragic loss of the retired senior military officer.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the Katsina State Government expressed deep sorrow over the death of the retired general, describing it as a monumental loss to his family, Katsina State and the nation.

According to the statement, Major General Abubakar died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors, despite sustained efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release.

Governor Radda described the incident as “a dark moment” and said it underscored the urgent need for stronger collaboration in the fight against banditry and other violent crimes threatening communities across the state.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family and assured residents that his administration remained committed to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure those responsible for the abduction and death of the retired military officer are brought to justice.

Earlier, Governor Radda returned to Katsina through the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport after participating in a high-level security meeting convened by President Tinubu in Abuja.

During the visit, the governor also held separate consultations with the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Army Staff, the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), where discussions focused on the prevailing security situation in Katsina State and strategies for restoring lasting peace.

The governor’s engagements formed part of ongoing efforts by the Katsina State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies, to strengthen security operations and address the challenges of banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

On arrival in Katsina, Governor Radda was received at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Airport by the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fagge; the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 14, Bello Shehu; and the Chairman of Katsina Local Government Area, Hon. Isah Miqdad.

The state government reiterated its resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the protection of lives and property across Katsina, while praying for the peaceful repose of the late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar.
