The Governing Council of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), Katsina State, has approved the appointment of Dr. Hassan Usman as the new University Librarian.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Alhaji Ali Abubakar Jatau, announced the appointment shortly after the Council’s 40th Regular Meeting held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Hillside Royal Suites, Katsina.
The appointment followed the consideration of the report of the Joint Council/Senate Selection Board on the appointment of a University Librarian.
According to Jatau, the appointment followed a rigorous selection process involving five shortlisted candidates who were invited for interview. The Selection Board subsequently submitted its recommendation to the Governing Council, which selected and approved Dr. Usman’s appointment.
Dr. Usman, born on October 30, 1980, in Samaru, Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, began his education at Samaru L.E.A. Primary School, Zaria, before proceeding to Government Secondary School (GSS), Bomo, where he obtained his Senior Secondary School Certificate.
He later attended Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science and a master’s degree in Information Management. He subsequently obtained another master’s degree in Library Science from the International University of Bamenda (IUB), Cameroon.
He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Library and Information Science from Career Point University, India.
The new University Librarian has built a career spanning several years in academic librarianship, rising through the ranks from Librarian II to Principal Librarian.
Before his appointment, Dr. Usman was the Librarian of the Division of Agricultural Colleges (DAC), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
He has also served in several capacities at ABU, including Faculty of Education Librarian, Faculty of Social Sciences Librarian and Abdullahi Muhammad Public Library Librarian.
Beyond ABU, Dr. Usman has served as a member of the Kaduna State Library Board, representing Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also served as a Visiting Lecturer at FUDMA, where he contributed to teaching, library administration, academic support services and the promotion of research and scholarship.
An accomplished scholar, Dr. Usman has authored and co-authored several scholarly articles published in reputable national and international journals. His research contributions have focused on advancing the field of Library and Information Science and supporting knowledge creation and dissemination.
The university described the new Librarian as a professional recognised for his integrity, diligence, administrative competence and commitment to excellence.
FUDMA Management expressed optimism that his experience, vision and dedication would further strengthen the University Library, improve access to information resources, promote research excellence and support the institution’s strategic objectives.
Dr. Usman is married and blessed with six children.
