The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government, according to a statement issued on April 29, 2026, and signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
In the statement, the minister congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion, commending their dedication, hard work, and contributions to national development. He noted that the efforts of workers remain essential to the country’s growth and prosperity.
Tunji-Ojo also urged workers to continue to uphold the values of patriotism, productivity, and commitment to duty, stressing the importance of unity and diligence in nation-building.
The minister further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and creating a conducive environment for economic growth. He called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the celebration.
Workers’ Day, observed annually on May 1, celebrates the contributions of workers and the labour movement worldwide.
