Katsina | November 14, 2025

Academic and non-academic activities will resume at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina (UMYU) after all four in-house unions suspended their two-week warning strike, which started on November 3, 2025.

The unions — ASUU, SSANU, NAAT and NASU — announced the suspension on Thursday following a meeting with a committee set up by the Katsina State Government. The committee reportedly agreed to address key demands that triggered the industrial action.

The warning strike was called to protest issues including:

  • Withdrawal of a private firm managing the university’s online portal
  • Implementation of an improved salary structure
  • Delayed staff promotions and arrears
  • Concerns over working conditions and university autonomy

The unions said the government has now made commitments to resolve these problems within agreed timelines.

In a circular signed by Nabila Dahiru Anche, Assistant Chief Information and Protocol Officer, Office of the Vice Chancellor, the unions expressed appreciation to the Visitor, Chancellor, state authorities, students, parents, and the university community for their support.

The suspension takes effect immediately, from November 13, 2025.

Reactions on Campus

Students and staff welcomed the decision but expressed mixed feelings over the possibility of future disruptions.

Abubakar Shehu, a 400-level Computer Science student, said the shutdown created uncertainty.

“We were worried the semester might be extended again. I’m relieved classes are resuming, but we hope this agreement holds.”

Laila Ahmad, a student of English/Education, called for lasting solutions.

“Strikes are becoming too frequent. Government and unions need to end this cycle once and for all.”

A senior administrative officer, who requested anonymity, said morale has been affected for years.

“We want to work, but the conditions have not been encouraging. Implementation is what matters now.”

A lecturer of the Faculty of Education described the suspension as progress but noted that the underlying issues remain sensitive.

“These challenges affect teaching, research and students’ welfare. The government must follow through.”

What Happens Next?

The unions say they will monitor the implementation of the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure that the government delivers on its commitments.

Academic activities are expected to resume fully today.

Fasaha Stream will continue to monitor developments at UMYU.
