President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police.

The development was announced in a statement issued on February 24, 2026, by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the State House, Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter earlier in the day, citing pressing family considerations. President Tinubu expressed appreciation for his “decades of distinguished service” to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, commending his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security architecture.

Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023 for a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
In appointing Disu in an acting capacity with immediate effect, the President said the decision was taken in view of the prevailing security challenges in the country and in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance. He expressed confidence that the Acting IGP’s experience, operational depth and leadership capacity would provide steady direction for the Nigeria Police Force at a critical time.
The statement added that, in compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will thereafter be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
