Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, on Thursday flagged off the construction of the ₦4 billion Filin Polo–Ring Road project, marking what he described as a significant step in the state’s ongoing urban renewal drive.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Radda said the 4-kilometre asphalt concrete road would transform Filin Polo, an inner-city community that has suffered years of infrastructural neglect. The project, awarded to Mothercat Limited with a 12-month completion timeline, will feature drainage systems, solar-powered streetlights, pedestrian walkways and traffic markings.
The Governor explained that the community has long battled poor road access, congestion, inadequate drainage and security concerns, noting that the new project would “reverse years of neglect and unlock fresh economic opportunities.” He added that the government had released 40 per cent mobilisation funds to ensure prompt commencement and timely delivery.
Radda also assured residents that compensation would be paid to owners of properties affected by the road alignment. He said assessments had been concluded in line with due process.
“This project is not just a road; it is an investment in the quality of life of our people,” the Governor said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to people-centred development. He commended the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport for its role in the planning process and warned that the project would be strictly monitored to ensure adherence to quality standards.
The Governor also appealed for cooperation from residents of Filin Polo and neighbouring communities as construction progresses.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr. (Dr.) Sani Magaji Ingawa, described the project as part of a deliberate strategy to expand infrastructure and improve living conditions in the state capital. He said the new road would ease traffic congestion, improve night-time security through solar streetlights, open up the area for development and increase property values.
“For years, Filin Polo has faced poor access roads, congestion, environmental challenges and insecurity due to darkness. This project marks the beginning of real transformation,” he said.
The Chairman of Katsina Local Government, Hon. Isah Miqdad, thanked the Governor on behalf of the community, saying the intervention demonstrated genuine commitment to residents’ welfare. He pledged full community support for the project.
Other dignitaries at the event included the Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Bishir Gambo Saulawa; Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning, Dr. Faisal Kaita; Member representing Katsina Local Government in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Aliyu Abubakar Albaba; Member representing Bakori Local Government and Chairman of the House Committee on Works and Housing; and Alhaji Salisu Mamman Kadandani, Chairman of Continental Computers.
