Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has commissioned a 100 kilowatt-peak solar renewable energy facility at Aminu Abdullahi House, headquarters of the Katsina State Radio Service, boosting the station’s transmission capacity from about five to six hours daily to up to 24 hours.
Speaking at the event, the governor said the project would provide the station with an independent and reliable power supply, significantly reducing diesel consumption and dependence on the national grid.

“With this facility, the station can operate for up to 24 hours if necessary, ensuring more efficient and reliable broadcasting for the people of Katsina State,” he said.
The solar system is supported by a 120 kilowatt-hour battery energy storage system designed to guarantee uninterrupted power supply.
The General Manager of the station, Malam Lawal Attahiru Bakori, described the development as a major milestone, noting that for years the station struggled with limited transmission hours due to power challenges.
“Before now, we could only transmit for about five to six hours daily. With this installation, we will now revert to transmitting for up to 18 hours continuously as it used to be,” he said.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Power and Energy, Dr. Hafiz Ahmed, explained that the project forms part of broader solar energy interventions across key sectors in the state to enhance service delivery and reduce operational costs.
Commissioner for Information, Dr. Bala Salisu Zango, also commended the governor for the intervention, saying it would strengthen information dissemination across the state.
The event was attended by the Chairman of the KTRTV Board, Malam Ahmed Abdulkadir; the General Manager of Katsina State Television (KTTV), Abba Zayyan; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Comrade Tukur Hassan Dan-Ali; and other senior government officials.
Earlier, Governor Radda also commissioned the connection of the Katsina State Institute of Technology and Management (KSITM) to the national grid, ending more than a decade of total dependence on diesel generators at the institution.
“For over ten years, this institute had no connection to the national grid and relied entirely on diesel to run its operations,” the governor said, describing the project as part of his administration’s “Building Your Future” strategy, particularly its energy component.
The Special Adviser on Power and Energy disclosed that initial bids for the KSITM project ranged between ₦1.2 billion and ₦2 billion but were reduced to ₦270 million following a value-for-money review process.
The Rector of KSITM, Dr. Musa Ahmed Zayyad, said the institute had accumulated over ₦50 million in diesel liabilities due to years of generator use before the intervention.
Both projects, according to the governor, reflect the administration’s commitment to improving energy supply in public institutions and enhancing service delivery across the state.
