The Sultanate Council Sokoto has announced that Muslims across Nigeria are to begin the search for the new moon of Shawwal on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH.
In a statement issued on March 17, the Council called on the Muslim Ummah to look out for the crescent moon, which will signal the end of Ramadan and the commencement of Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
The statement, signed by Sambo Wali Junaidu, who serves as Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, urged anyone who sights the moon to report to the nearest district or village head for onward communication.
Such reports, the Council noted, would be relayed to the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who holds the authority to officially announce the sighting.
The Council further prayed for divine guidance and support for Muslims in fulfilling the religious obligation.
