New York — Nigeria has secured a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council after polling 172 votes out of 181 cast in an election by the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
Nigeria is among four African nations — alongside Zambia, Ghana and Burundi — elected to serve on the 47-member Council for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2027.
Other countries elected include Brazil, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Kuwait, Nepal, Moldova, Ukraine, Uruguay and others.
The election was largely uncontested, with 15 seats available for 15 candidates.
Nigeria’s election gives the country a greater role in international human rights discussions and decision-making at the Geneva-based Council.
