The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, has defended the Commission’s recent regulatory actions, insisting they are not aimed at stifling press freedom but at promoting professionalism in Nigeria’s broadcasting sector.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE TV NewsNight on Thursday night, Ebuebu addressed concerns triggered by the NBC’s April 17, 2026 notice warning broadcasters against violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
He said the directive had been widely misunderstood, stressing that it was “a firm reminder” that broadcasting must adhere to principles of fairness, balance and neutrality, especially as the country approaches a sensitive political period.
According to him, while presenters are free to ask questions, seek opinions and moderate discussions, they must not present personal views as facts, intimidate guests, deny opposing voices a fair hearing, or make pronouncements on matters pending before the courts.
The NBC boss emphasised that broadcasters bear full editorial responsibility for all content aired on their platforms, including contributions from guests.
He warned that stations must verify and substantiate serious allegations before broadcasting them, noting that airing unverified claims could violate the Code and expose organisations to legal risks such as libel and slander.
On enforcement, Ebuebu explained that the Commission operates a structured sanction system categorised into Classes A, B and C breaches. He added that license holders are given the opportunity to respond and defend themselves before any final regulatory action is taken.
Reiterating the Commission’s mandate, the NBC Director-General said its role is to uphold broadcasting standards that protect both journalists and the public interest, while ensuring compliance with the Constitution and international human rights obligations.
He maintained that the Commission remains committed to fostering a media environment where “freedom and responsibility go hand in hand,” amid ongoing debates over regulation and press freedom in Nigeria.
