The Katsina State Government has commenced the training of 3,371 head teachers, principals and School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) members in a renewed push to improve instructional delivery and strengthen school leadership across the state.
The three-day step-down training programme, organised by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in collaboration with the Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), is being implemented under the TESS Project. The exercise ran from February 13 to 15, 2026, with one of the centres located at Mani Central Model Primary School.
Participants drawn from the 34 local government areas of the state are being equipped with modern instructional leadership and school management skills aimed at improving teaching quality and learning outcomes in primary and junior secondary schools.
The training focuses on structured pedagogy management at the school level. Sessions cover self-study modules, guided instructional materials, learner assessment strategies, practical approaches to implementing structured pedagogy, effective school supervision and teacher support systems, as well as accountability mechanisms to enhance performance.
Education stakeholders at the event said empowering school leaders with contemporary pedagogical skills is critical to repositioning basic education in the state. They noted that head teachers and principals play a central role in translating education policies into measurable improvements in classroom practice.
The step-down model adopted for the programme is designed to ensure sustainability, as participants are expected to transfer the knowledge gained to teachers in their respective schools.
In addition, SBMC members are receiving targeted training to strengthen community participation and oversight in school development projects under the Result (1) Phase II interventions.
The sessions are aimed at enabling SBMC members to effectively use construction, renovation and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) manuals, clarify community roles in project implementation, and develop School Improvement Plans and simplified Bills of Quantities. They are also being sensitised on Environmental and Social safeguards, including land donation procedures, safety standards and grievance redress mechanisms.
Participants at the Mani centre included representatives from Mani, Mashi, Dutsi and Bindawa local government areas.
A monitoring team that visited the centre comprised Kabir Dodo, Director of Junior Secondary Schools at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education; Alhaji Tanimu Ma’azu, Director of PRS at SUBEB; Alhaji Isiyaku Mani, Zonal Coordinator of the Mani ZEQA Office; Sani Sulaiman Danjuma, Public Relations Officer of the ministry; and Bashir Ya’u, Media Assistant to the Katsina State Governor at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
Officials said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the state government to consolidate gains in basic education and ensure improved school governance and community engagement.
