Katsina State is embarking on a significant shift in the way it oversees local government administration, following the approval of a sweeping restructuring of the Local Government Inspectorate Department by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda.
The reform, announced in a press release dated March 18, 2025, marks a departure from the long-standing decentralized zonal system to a more centralized structure aimed at strengthening oversight and improving efficiency across the state’s 34 local government areas.
Under the new arrangement, the existing zonal inspectorate offices spread across key locations in the state have been scrapped. In their place, the government has established three Zonal Directorates of Inspection, all to be based at the department’s headquarters. This change is expected to streamline coordination and bring monitoring activities closer to the centre of decision-making.
With the restructuring, resident inspectors posted to all local government areas will now report directly to the newly created directorates. Their reports will focus largely on project execution and financial management within the councils, providing a clearer and more consistent flow of information to the state authorities.
The reform also extends to technical supervision, as engineers within the inspectorate have been reassigned to the new directorates. This is intended to ensure closer supervision of ongoing projects and enable more effective, real-time monitoring of infrastructure development across the state.

Speaking on the development, the Special Adviser on Local Government Inspectorate, Lawal Rufa’i Safana, said the restructuring is designed to enhance service delivery and improve accountability at the grassroots level. He explained that the initiative seeks to reposition and rejuvenate the working relationship between the state and local governments, while making monitoring and reporting processes more transparent and efficient.
The state government believes that by adopting a leaner and more centralized system, it will be able to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and gain better insight into how public funds are utilized, as well as the progress of projects across local communities.
