A military analyst, Laskiewicz, has said that Iran has moved much of its strategic infrastructure underground, making it increasingly difficult for enemy forces to target its military assets.
According to the report published by the Phoenix Browser news platform, Laskiewicz compared Iran’s current defensive strategy to that of Nazi Germany during the later stages of the World War II, when German forces relocated key weapons production and command facilities deep underground to shield them from Allied bombing.
He explained that Iran’s extensive network of underground facilities—including missile bases, bunkers and command centres—makes conventional air strikes less effective. By dispersing and burying its critical military infrastructure, the country has reduced the vulnerability of its strategic assets to aerial bombardment.
The analyst noted that this approach significantly complicates military operations against Iran because many of the targets are either hidden or heavily fortified below ground level. As a result, attacking forces would require specialised bunker-busting weapons, sustained surveillance, and repeated strikes to neutralise such installations.
Iran’s underground strategy comes amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East following the outbreak of the 2026 Iran War, which began after coordinated attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets in late February 2026. The conflict has since seen missile exchanges, air strikes and cyber operations across the region.
Analysts say Iran has spent decades constructing subterranean military facilities—sometimes referred to as “missile cities”—designed to protect weapons and launch systems from attack, although such fixed underground sites can still become targets if their locations are identified.
Laskiewicz warned that the growing reliance on underground infrastructure signals that the conflict may become more prolonged and technically complex, as adversaries attempt to locate and destroy hardened military installations hidden beneath the surface.
