INEC Fixes February 20, 2027 for Presidential, National Assembly Elections

-

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while Governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls will hold on March 6, 2027.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, announced the dates on Friday in Abuja while formally releasing the Notice of Election and the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Elections.

Describing the announcement as “a significant milestone in our democratic journey,” Prof. Amupitan said the move reflects the Commission’s constitutional responsibility and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.

According to the electoral body, the February 20 polls will cover the offices of President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The March 6 elections will be conducted for Governors and Deputy Governors — except in Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Ondo and Osun states — alongside members of the various State Houses of Assembly.

Prof. Amupitan explained that the publication of the Notice of Election complies with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates that such notice be issued not later than 360 days before the date of the election.

The Commission urged political parties, stakeholders and eligible voters to take note of the timetable and prepare accordingly for the 2027 general elections.
