Darma Assumes Office as Housing Minister, Promises Open-Door Policy and Reforms

-

The new Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, has formally assumed office, pledging an open-door policy, broad stakeholder engagement and reforms to reposition the sector.

Darma, who took office on April 27, 2026, said his leadership would focus on inclusiveness, accountability, innovation and results-driven performance in line with the Federal Government’s housing agenda.

“I am ready to move the Ministry forward. My doors are open to everyone. I am willing to listen to ideas, suggestions and contributions from all stakeholders,” he said.

The minister disclosed plans to hold consultations with heads of departments and agencies, as well as professional and regulatory bodies, to review the Ministry’s policies, programmes and institutional frameworks.

He said the engagements would help identify strengths, weaknesses and challenges within the system, with a view to developing a clear roadmap for improved service delivery.

Darma also stressed the importance of teamwork and discipline among staff, warning against bureaucratic bottlenecks, indiscipline and actions that could hinder progress.

Highlighting his priorities, the minister identified urban renewal—particularly slum upgrading—as a key focus area, alongside expanding access to affordable housing and promoting inclusive urban planning.

He added that his administration would build on existing achievements while introducing new strategies, including strengthening public-private partnerships, advancing land reforms, deepening skills development and leveraging digitalisation to improve housing delivery.

“I am committed to building on the solid foundation already laid and to driving bold, innovative solutions that will expand access to affordable housing, create jobs and foster sustainable urban development,” he said.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Abdullahi Yusuf Ata, said the ministry had recorded progress since its re-establishment in 2023, particularly through public-private partnerships.

He cited the Renewed Hope Housing Programme across 17 states, which he said
