Bakori Peace Deal Records Major Breakthrough as Bandits Release 45 Captives

-

By Shehu Bakori

The renewed peace agreement between bandits and communities in the Bakori area of Katsina State has begun to yield significant results, with 45 abducted persons regaining their freedom after a fresh round of negotiations.

The victims were released today and received by the Member representing Bakori Local Government in the Katsina State House of Assembly, Engr. Abdurrahman Kandarawa. They were brought back from Tsafe, where they had been held before their release.

According to local sources, the breakthrough followed sustained dialogue involving community leaders and intermediaries as part of efforts to consolidate the peace accord signed last week. The release is seen as a major confidence-building step in the ongoing attempt to restore stability across the Bakori axis, which has suffered years of repeated attacks and kidnappings.

Engr. Kandarawa, who welcomed the freed captives on arrival, commended all parties who played a role in the negotiations. He described the development as “a hopeful step toward lasting peace” and urged communities to continue supporting non-violent approaches that prioritise the safety of residents.

Community leaders also expressed optimism that the momentum would lead to the release of more victims still in captivity and ultimately end the cycle of violence.

The Katsina State Government is expected to provide medical care, counselling, and reintegration support for the rescued individuals as efforts continue to strengthen security and foster sustainable peace in Bakori and its surrounding communities.
