It is with immense pride and deep personal joy that I write this tribute to my dear friend and primary school classmate, Alhaji Muhammad Dikko Abdullahi, on the occasion of his well-deserved conferment with the revered traditional title of Tafidan Yariman Safana on the blessed day of Sallah.
Our friendship spans decades, rooted in the innocence of our early school days and strengthened over time by shared values, mutual respect, and family bonds—further deepened by the connection between our wives, who were also classmates. Today, I celebrate not just a friend, but a man whose life journey reflects purpose, excellence, and service.
I remember vividly when Dikko joined our class in Primary 5, following the transfer of his father as Mataimakin Alkali, which brought his family to Bakori. From the very moment he settled into our classroom, it became clear that he was no ordinary pupil. He consistently claimed the first position term after term, displacing even the brightest among us who had long held that spot. No one could surpass him—his brilliance was simply exceptional.
Indeed, Dikko and I were among the ten pupils specially selected from Primary 5 and promoted to sit for the Common Entrance Examination alongside Primary 6 pupils. We all passed successfully and proceeded to secondary school, leaving behind our classmates—a testament to his early brilliance and determination.
Beyond academics, Dikko was equally outstanding on the football field. His skill, energy, and teamwork earned him the position of Deputy School Captain—an honour rarely given to someone who was not in his final year. I personally benefited from his talent; in our “hot shots” sessions, he coached me on techniques, including how to strike the ball with the back of the foot—lessons I have never forgotten.
The title of Tafida is not merely honorary—it is steeped in history and tradition, closely associated with the noble Dallazawa Dynasty. By heritage, Alhaji Dikko stands firmly within this lineage through his maternal ancestry as a descendant of Sarki Abubakar, the Emir of Katsina during the historic era of British incursion under Lord Lugard. By blood, therefore, the title finds a rightful home in him. Yet, beyond lineage, he has earned it through loyalty, dedication, and years of close service to the esteemed Maigirma Yariman Katsina, Alhaji Sada Rufai, whom he has represented with distinction in both personal and official capacities.
Professionally, Alhaji Dikko Abdullahi is the embodiment of excellence and discipline. Before his distinguished federal career, he had served the Katsina State Government with distinction, rising to the position of Director of Finance/Financial Controller under the IFAD-supported programme. He had also earlier shared his knowledge as a lecturer in Economics at Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, shaping young minds with the same brilliance he displayed as a student.
His transition to the Bureau of Public Enterprises came under the leadership of Nasir El-Rufai, who, while serving as Director-General of the Bureau, recognized his competence and brought him into the organisation. There, he rose to the position of Director in the Industries and Communications Department, playing pivotal roles in policy formulation, restructuring, and privatization efforts across key national sectors.
From the commercialization of NIPOST to strategic engagements in the power and mining sectors, his work has left lasting imprints on the nation’s economic landscape. His leadership extended to board-level responsibilities in major power distribution and generation companies, demonstrating the trust reposed in his expertise and judgment.
Even in retirement, his commitment to national development and enterprise remains steadfast. His role as Project Coordinator for System Power Limited in the Zungeru Hydro Electric Power bid, and his current directorships in agricultural ventures such as Desert Farms Limited and Sterling Poultry Farm, reflect a man who continues to contribute meaningfully to economic growth and food security.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dikko’s generosity and sense of brotherhood remain deeply admirable. He has quietly extended financial assistance to some of our less privileged primary school classmates, embodying compassion and responsibility toward those we grew up with. He was also instrumental in bringing us back together, initiating the formation of our former classmates’ WhatsApp group—a platform that rekindled old bonds and eventually led to memorable reunions and meetings.
Academically, his pursuit of knowledge is both impressive and inspiring—from his foundational studies in Economics and Business Administration at Ahmadu Bello University to international certifications in financial management and Islamic banking. His ongoing PhD further underscores a lifelong dedication to learning and intellectual growth.
Yet, beyond titles, achievements, and credentials, what truly defines Alhaji Dikko is his character—his humility, loyalty, and enduring sense of duty. He is a man who has carried his responsibilities with dignity, served with integrity, and lived with honour.
As he assumes the title of Tafidan Yariman Safana, I have no doubt that he will bring to it the same excellence, wisdom, and grace that have defined his life’s journey. The title has found not just a bearer, but a custodian worthy of its history and expectations.
May Allah grant him the strength, wisdom, and good health to uphold the dignity of this noble title, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
