Abuja, April 2, 2026 — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of undermining Nigeria’s democracy, alleging bias and unlawful interference in the party’s leadership crisis.
Speaking at a world press conference in Abuja, the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, described INEC’s recent actions as “a direct assault on democracy” and warned that they could erode public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mark alleged that Nigeria’s democratic gains since 1999 were under threat, claiming that recent developments point to a deliberate attempt to weaken opposition parties and limit political freedoms under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He accused the electoral body of acting in contempt of a Court of Appeal ruling by withdrawing recognition of the ADC’s leadership and creating what he called a “false equivalence” between the party’s recognised leadership and another faction.
According to him, INEC’s action followed ongoing litigation over the party’s leadership, despite the fact that the commission had earlier acknowledged changes arising from a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on July 29, 2025, which produced a new leadership for the party.
Mark insisted that there was no legitimate dispute over the leadership of the ADC, maintaining that the current executives, including National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, were duly constituted and remain the lawful leaders of the party.
The former Senate President further alleged that the developments were part of a broader agenda to weaken opposition parties and pave the way for a one-party system ahead of the next general elections.
He also linked the situation to worsening economic and security challenges in the country, arguing that the government was seeking to retain power despite public dissatisfaction.
The ADC chairman warned that INEC’s actions could affect the party’s participation in upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, as well as its scheduled congresses and national convention later in April.
He disclosed that the party would proceed with its planned activities, noting that it had duly notified INEC as required by law.
Mark called for the resignation or removal of the INEC chairman and national commissioners, alleging loss of confidence in their ability to conduct credible elections.
He also appealed to the international community to take note of the situation and urged Nigerians to defend democratic values and resist any attempt to impose a one-party state.
INEC has yet to officially respond to the allegations.
