The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has prioritised the delivery of 4,000 housing units in 15 state capitals under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme, as the National Assembly called for increased and sustained funding for the sector during the 2026 budget defence.
The housing units are planned for Osun, Oyo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, Benue, Nasarawa, Kwara, Katsina, Sokoto, Gombe, Kano and Yobe States, as part of efforts to expand affordable housing supply nationwide.
The call for stronger financial backing came during the Ministry’s budget presentation before the Senate and House of Representatives Committees.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to supporting policies and funding mechanisms that would strengthen housing delivery.
“Housing delivery remains central to national development, and the Senate will continue to support initiatives that expand access to affordable homes and strengthen urban infrastructure,” he said, urging sustained collaboration to ensure effective implementation and optimal use of appropriated funds.
Similarly, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat, Abdulmumin Jibrin, stressed the sector’s multi-dimensional impact on the economy, noting that housing stimulates activity across several value chains and generates employment for skilled and unskilled workers alike.
He disclosed that consultations with key funding institutions showed consensus that the housing sector remains underfunded and requires increased investment to boost delivery capacity and maximise economic impact.

Earlier, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, presented the Ministry’s 2026 budget priorities, describing them as aimed at consolidating ongoing projects and sustaining momentum in housing and urban infrastructure development.
Beyond the 4,000-unit programme, the Ministry plans to complete National Housing Programme projects in over 20 states and the FCT, rehabilitate and restore 28 federal secretariats nationwide, and complete ongoing federal secretariats in Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Nasarawa, Zamfara and Osun States. Additional projects include completing new federal secretariats in Abia, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Kogi and Taraba States, constructing an additional office block at the Ministry’s Mabushi headquarters in Abuja, and upgrading Building Crafts Training Schools in Yaba, Lagos State, and Ikeduru, Imo State.
The Minister also sought special funding interventions to address outstanding liabilities and national commitments, including MDGs/SDGs projects, Zonal Intervention Projects, urban renewal and slum upgrading programmes, and physical development planning initiatives. He further requested support for on-site infrastructure such as roads, drainage and utilities to strengthen public-private partnership housing developments across the country.
The Ministry reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the National Assembly to expand affordable housing, strengthen urban infrastructure and drive inclusive economic growth.
