The Katsina State Government has sponsored 34 students to Germany for further studies in nursing and midwifery as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare sector.
The students, drawn from the 34 local government areas of the state, will begin with an eight-month German language training programme in Abuja before proceeding to Lagos to sit for a qualifying examination required for admission into institutions in Germany.
The State Commissioner for Health, Musa Adamu, disclosed this on Saturday during a farewell ceremony for the students. He said the initiative forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery and enhance the skills of medical personnel in the state.
He urged the students to serve as good ambassadors of Katsina State and remain focused on achieving their academic goals.
“See this opportunity as a pathway to improving not only your lives but also the wellbeing of society as a whole,” he said.
Also speaking, the Assistant Director of Nursing Services, Muhammad Nuradeen Umar, said the students were selected strictly on merit, with one candidate chosen from each of the 34 local government areas based on their performance and dedication at their various workplaces.
He explained that the students would attend Koode Academy in Abuja for intensive German language training, including medical terminology used in hospitals. The state government has provided accommodation and a monthly allowance of ₦50,000 for each student, while their salaries will continue to be paid during the training period.
After completing the language programme, the students will travel to Lagos to take a certification examination at a German-affiliated centre, where they are expected to attain at least a B2 level in the German language to qualify for further studies in Germany.
Government officials said the programme is part of ongoing efforts by the Katsina State Government to expand opportunities for professional development and increase the number of highly skilled healthcare workers in the state.
