Concerns Grow Over Renewed Insecurity in Bakori Despite Peace Deal

-

Concerns are mounting in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State over a resurgence of insecurity, despite an earlier peace agreement reportedly reached between local authorities, community leaders and armed groups operating in the area.

The situation was highlighted in a Facebook post by a resident, Mahadi Danbinta Guga, who expressed worry that the relative calm recorded after the peace arrangement appears to be weakening. According to the post, a resident identified as Ibraheem Ado Guga, also known as Iro Ado, lost his life during an attack along the Guga–Bakori Road on Thursday evening at about 5:45 p.m.

The deceased was described as the only son of his mother, who is reportedly ill. The incident allegedly occurred at Dajin Guga area, where he was said to have been shot by suspected bandits.

Mahadi Danbinta Guga noted that the peace initiative initially raised hopes among residents, but that the calm which followed reportedly lasted only a short period. He claimed that incidents of robbery and attacks have continued in various forms, including loss of property and injuries, although he acknowledged that kidnapping incidents had reduced.

The post further stated that many residents had remained silent, either in the hope that the situation would improve over time or due to fear of victimisation. It appealed to local authorities to consider reviewing existing strategies and exploring alternative measures capable of delivering lasting peace and security in the area.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from security agencies or local government authorities on the specific incident mentioned. Residents continue to call for sustained efforts to protect lives and property and to restore confidence in the peace process.
