-

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office, citing health reasons. His resignation took effect immediately following a formal notification to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a letter dated December 1.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed that President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Badaru’s service to the country. The President is expected to forward the name of a new nominee to the Senate later this week.

Badaru, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023. He was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023, as part of President Tinubu’s first cabinet.

His exit comes at a time the President recently declared a national security emergency, with further details on the scope of the initiative expected to be announced soon.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
