FG Launches Digital Procurement System to Tackle Delays in Education Sector

-

Abuja, March 11, 2026 — The Federal Ministry of Education (Nigeria) has launched a new digital platform aimed at eliminating delays and improving transparency in procurement processes across the country’s education sector.

The platform, known as the Procurement Compliance Monitoring System (PICOMS), is designed to enhance accountability and efficiency in the handling of procurement activities within the ministry and its affiliated institutions.

Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, announced the initiative during a capacity-building session for procurement officers held at the auditorium of the National Universities Commission in Abuja.

According to the minister, delays in procurement procedures have slowed the implementation of key education projects due to issues such as incomplete documentation, weak submissions and procedural lapses.

Alausa said strengthening procurement compliance is critical to ensuring that education projects are delivered efficiently and that public funds are properly managed.

The new system will enable procurement processes to be handled electronically, allow real-time tracking of submissions and help reduce approval timelines across the ministry, its agencies, commissions, parastatals and tertiary institutions.

Also speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Adebowale Adebukola Adedokun, highlighted recurring problems in the sector, including incomplete documentation and weak procurement submissions.

Officials said the introduction of PICOMS is part of broader efforts by the ministry to strengthen transparency, accountability and the timely execution of education projects across Nigeria.
