Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has announced government approval for the construction of 70 new secondary schools to expand access to education, reduce classroom congestion and improve learning outcomes across the state.
The governor made the announcement during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration, held this year after being postponed due to scheduling constraints. He described teachers as the backbone of human capital development and central to the state’s reform agenda.

Governor Radda said the new schools form part of broader investments in the education sector captured in the 2026 budget, which allocates significant funding for infrastructure, teachers’ welfare, instructional materials and service delivery.
“In addition to building new schools, we are undertaking massive rehabilitation of existing facilities to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning,” he said.
To support teachers serving in remote communities, the governor disclosed plans to provide electric motorcycles to rural teachers, complementing existing rural allowance incentives to ease transportation challenges and enhance service delivery.
He also revealed that more than 7,000 qualified teachers were recruited in the last exercise to address shortages in primary and secondary schools, with another round of recruitment underway to further improve the student–teacher ratio.
As part of efforts to strengthen professional standards, Governor Radda announced plans to establish Teachers’ Development Centres in each of the three senatorial zones to provide continuous training, mentoring and skills enhancement.
“Education is dynamic, and our teachers must continuously upgrade their skills to meet global standards. These centres will serve as hubs for capacity development,” he said, stressing that no society can rise above the quality of its teachers.
The governor, who described himself as a member of the teaching profession, congratulated educators across the state for their dedication and sacrifices in shaping the younger generation.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Yusuf Suleiman Jibia, said award recipients were selected through a transparent, merit-based process that assessed classroom performance, innovation, community service and overall impact.
The Permanent Secretary of the MBASE Ministry, Hajiya Ummulkhairi, called for sustained collaboration to strengthen the education sector, while stakeholders including the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), parents and community leaders commended the government’s commitment to teacher welfare and recognition of excellence.

The Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Dr. Kabir Magaji, and the Executive Chairman of the Teachers Service Board, Alhaji Sada Muhammad Sada, highlighted ongoing reforms including teacher recruitment, promotions and the engagement of specialist educators.
As part of the celebration, the MBASE Ministry honoured outstanding teachers with merit-based vehicle awards and distributed essential learning materials to schools.
The event was attended by senior government officials, members of the State Executive Council and other dignitaries.
