The Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Transforming Education System at State Level (TESS) Project and development partners, has commenced a three-day training workshop for Master Trainers of Non-Formal Education (NFE) facilitators on the Accelerated Basic Education Model.
The workshop, supported by the Universal Basic Education Commission–Global Partnership for Education (UBEC-GPE), the World Bank and the Education Support Programme, is holding at the Education Resource Centre (ERC) in Katsina, according to organisers.
Hajiya Binta Abdulmumini
Speaking at the opening, the TESS Project Coordinator in Katsina State, Hajiya Binta Abdulmumini, said the training was designed to strengthen the capacity of master trainers with modern teaching methodologies, practical instructional skills and effective facilitation techniques for non-formal education centres. She said the intervention targets out-of-school children and adult learners across the state.
Abdulmumini described the initiative as a performance-based reward project, noting that states that demonstrate commitment and improved learning outcomes stand to benefit more from the programme. She urged participants to actively engage in the sessions to enable Katsina State maximise the opportunities provided by the intervention.
Alhaji Isa Zakari
In a goodwill message, the Chairman of Katsina State SUBEB, represented by the Board Secretary, Alhaji Isa Zakari, described the training as timely and strategic. He said the capacity-building programme for master trainers under the Non-Formal Education Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP), particularly for Integrated Qur’anic Schools (IQS), was critical to improving centre-based learning and effective implementation of the accelerated learning model.
Zakari commended the Katsina State Government for its sustained efforts to address the challenge of out-of-school children and appreciated development partners for their support in strengthening the education sector. He also urged the master trainers to go beyond content delivery by equipping facilitators with practical teaching skills, appropriate methodologies, effective classroom management techniques and a solid understanding of the accelerated learning framework.
The workshop has brought together 60 participants, including representatives from 10 Integrated Qur’anic Education Centres and 50 teacher educators drawn from the State College of Education, Federal College of Education, and federal and state universities. Organisers said the trainees are expected to cascade the training to more than 1,000 Qur’anic teaching facilitators across Katsina State.
Officials from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Almajiri Commission, SUBEB and other relevant agencies are also participating in the programme.
The event was attended by the SUBEB Chairman, represented by the Board Secretary; the State TESS Project Coordinator; members of the TESS technical team; and development partners, including Prof. Muhammad Alkali, Team Lead; Dr. Muhammad Shehu Hussain; Dr. Murtala Akanbi Yusuf; Mr. Abdulsalam Solihu of UBEC; and Mr. Elliot, a supervisor from the World Bank.
