The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has commenced a nationwide verification and tracking exercise of constituency and zonal intervention projects in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in a move aimed at enforcing accountability and value for public funds.
The joint exercise, which was flagged off in Kano on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, is being conducted simultaneously across states where the ministry executed constituency projects. Teams drawn from both institutions have been deployed to carry out on-the-spot inspections to assess project quality, compliance with specifications and level of completion.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, warned contractors against substandard performance, stressing that the exercise was intended to ensure Nigerians derive the intended socio-economic benefits from constituency interventions. Belgore, who was represented by the Director of the Special Projects Unit, Olatunde Ajayi, said the verification would help determine whether projects were delivered in line with approved standards.
“This joint verification and tracking exercise with the ICPC is aimed at evaluating the impact of these projects and ensuring that they are executed to standard for the benefit of the people,” he said.
Belgore noted that the exercise underscores the ministry’s commitment to transparency, probity and responsible management of public resources, adding that non-performing contractors would be held accountable.
“The ministry, in collaboration with relevant oversight agencies, will not hesitate to invite contractors for corrective action where deficiencies are identified, or demand refunds to government coffers where projects have clearly failed to meet contractual obligations,” he said.
According to him, findings from the exercise will feed into evidence-based decision-making, help assess the relevance and effectiveness of constituency projects, and guide adjustments in future planning and implementation.
Also speaking, the ICPC Head of Constituency Projects Tracking, Bello Idris Bakori, said the commission’s involvement aligns with its mandate to prevent corruption through proactive monitoring of government projects. He said the initiative was designed to deter sharp practices and ensure that funds allocated to constituency projects translate into tangible development outcomes.
Bakori assured that all findings from the inspections would be properly documented and followed up in line with existing laws to protect public interest.
Projects inspected by the joint team during the Kano flag-off included the provision and installation of solar streetlights at the Government Girls Secondary School, Kwa, as well as in Bichi and Rimin Gado local government areas. The team also visited the construction site of a sporting facility comprising an indoor complex, football pitch and pavilion in Gwarzo town, and the Badume–Kyauta road linking Dawakin Tofa and Bichi local government areas.
The verification and tracking exercise is expected to continue across Kano State and other parts of the country in the coming days.
