No fewer than 10 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across five local government areas in Katsina State have been equipped with modern medical facilities, as part of a joint intervention by the state government and local councils to strengthen healthcare delivery at the grassroots.
The distribution, coordinated and supervised by the Katsina State Ministry for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, covered PHCs in Kankia, Kusada, Ingawa, Musawa and Matazu local government areas under the Kankia Zonal Centre of the ministry.
The initiative followed the joint procurement of hospital equipment by local government councils to equip rehabilitated and renovated PHCs across the state’s 34 local government areas. Officials said the exercise reflects the commitment of both the state and local governments to ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural communities.
According to the ministry, the transparent monitoring and supervision of the distribution process underscores its resolve to add value to the state government’s local government transformation agenda, alongside the autonomy granted to the councils.
The benefitting facilities include PHC Fadar Danzara and PHC Kunduru in Kankia LGA; PHC Kofa and PHC Kai-Kai in Kusada LGA; PHC Ganjuwa and PHC Dukuma in Ingawa LGA; PHC Kurkujan and PHC Danjanku in Musawa LGA; as well as PHC Dissi and PHC Rinjin Idi in Matazu LGA.
To ensure accountability, the ministry assigned directors to lead the conveyance and oversee the handover of the equipment. Those involved were the Director of Inspection, Alhaji Ibrahim Wali Umar, in Kusada LGA; DAS Alhaji Bello Isah Fago in Matazu LGA; Director of Works, Engineer Umar Faroukh Abdullahi, in Ingawa LGA; Director of Common Services, Alhaji Nasir Ibrahim Yar’adua, in Kankia LGA; and Director of Budget, Alhaji Babangida Aminu, in Musawa LGA.
Speaking through the assigned directors, the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Hon. Bishir Tanimu Gambo, alongside the Special Adviser on Local Government Inspectorate, Hon. Lawal Rufa’i Safana, charged the management of the benefitting PHCs to put the equipment into immediate use rather than keeping them in storage.
Village heads from the benefitting communities expressed appreciation to Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda and the ministry for what they described as a deliberate effort to improve healthcare services for the grassroots.
The handover ceremonies were witnessed by ministry officials, PHC coordinators, representatives of local government chairmen, councillors, Community Development Committees and traditional institutions across the five local government areas.
